For this reason, this splendid monument invites visitors and locals alike to explore it.\u00a0This brief introduction aims to provide essential <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chioscastle.gr\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=177%3A2011-05-19-18-11-38&amp;catid=1%3A2010-06-10-11-40-50&amp;Itemid=5&amp;lang=en\">information<\/a>\u00a0on the Castle\u2019s history to all those who wish to discover its well hidden secrets.\u00a0The area over which the Castle stands today has been inhabited since antiquity as it is testified by the earliest traces, which date from the Mycenaean period. B.C. \u2013 30 B.C). Ever since that time, the castle has been inhabited uninterruptedly despite the multiple attacks and invasions that ambitious conquerors afflicted to it throughout its long history. Its most glorious era was certainly that of the two Genoese occupations (1304-1329, 1346-1566), during which the island experienced a long period of an unprecedented prosperity. Eight of these towers &#8211; some of which stand almost intact &#8211; still defend proudly the Castle, undeniable witnesses of the former glory. The eastern section of the castle suffered heavy destruction in modern years, as a result of the construction of the new harbour. The Giustiniani belonged to several noble Genoese lineages. Among them those who were ruling Chios decided to join forces in the administration of the island and for this reason established a commercial company named Ma\u00f3na. They adopted a common name, namely Giustiniani, to facilitate their international commercial transactions. The Maona\u2019s main task was to exploit and commercialise the agrarian produce, animal husbandry and natural resources of the island. Under the Genoese, Chios became also a port of call and an entrep\u020ft for the international trade. A great variety of products from the East and the Black Sea markets were stored in Chios awaiting their transportation to the four points of the compass. Under the Genoese rule, Chios was promoted as the first port of the Levant and a strong commercial centre. The square embrasures were most suitable for cannons.\u00a0A deep moat filled with water surrounded the land walls, thus secluding the Castle from the areas outside the walls, the <em>Burgo<\/em>. It was an effective system of defence and protection against potential danger.\u00a0\u00a0Nowadays, the moat is a dry ditch, whereas the two stone bridges, that provided the means of contact with the walled town have been covered with soil; this took effect when Chios was united with Greece, because the authorities wanted to raise the level of the ditch and keep it above sea level. It is important to mention at this point that the Castle had three gates, namely: the main gate, the so-called <em>Porta<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Maggiore<\/em>, the western gate or \u2018<em>Ep\u00e1no Port\u00e9llo<\/em>\u2019 (i.e. the \u2018Upper Gate\u2019), and the Sea gate, known as the\u00a0<em>Porta di Marina.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 878px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chioscastle.gr\/wp-content\/gallery\/promaxwnes\/02-stormy-sky-vs-dusty-frontier.jpg\" alt=\"\u039f \u039d\u03cc\u03c4\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2 \u03a0\u03c1\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03c7\u03ce\u03bd\u03b1\u03c2, \u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c9\u03c2 \u03a0\u03c1\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03c7\u03ce\u03bd\u03b1\u03c2 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u0391\u03b3\u03af\u03bf\u03c5 \u0393\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u03b3\u03af\u03bf\u03c5\" width=\"878\" height=\"583\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The St. George (South) Bastion &#8211; The Defender of Porta Maggiore<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>The interior of the Castle is of high interest for the two following reasons: first, there is a live community of around 650 inhabitants, with uninterrupted, diachronic presence which goes back thousands of years ago; secondly, the Castle interior is a colourful mosaic, a palimpsest of monuments and buildings representative of different historical eras, which, in their turn, reveal hundreds of centuries of the castle\u2019s history.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Let us now take our little tour step-by-step\u2026<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>As soon as you walk through\u00a0the <em>Porta Maggiore<\/em>, a snaky corridor leads you to the recently restored \u2018Giustiniani Palace\u2019 (<em>Palataki Ioustiniani<\/em>); as its name reveals, the building used to house the guard authorities of the Castle during the Genoese rule. Adjacent to the \u2018Giustiniani Palace\u2019 you can see the \u2018Dark Dungeon\u2019 (<em>Skoteini Fulaki<\/em>), a building where in 1822, seventy distinguished members of the Chiot nobility along with the Orthodox bishop were imprisoned following the island\u2019s uprising against the Ottomans. The nobles were kept here until they were transferred to the main town square, the Vounaki, where they were hung.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1675\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1675\" style=\"width: 618px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chioscastle.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rsz_palataki_kai_skotiini_mairi_ververi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1675 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chioscastle.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rsz_palataki_kai_skotiini_mairi_ververi-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Photo May Ververi\" width=\"618\" height=\"463\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Justiniani Palace (left) &amp; The Dark Dungeon (right), Photo by Mary Ververi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Leaving the Giustiniani Palace and the Dark Dungeon behind it, a narrow pebbly path leads to the Castle Square, where you can see the Ottoman cemetery. The most outstanding and distinguished grave is that of Kar\u00e1 Al\u00ed Pash\u00e1, the admiral of the Ottoman fleet, whose juggernaut was blown up by Constantine Kan\u00e1ris. Kanaris was a hero of the Greek revolution and later minister of Maritime affairs and Prime Minister of Greece. In June 1822 he set fire to the Ottoman galley as a response to the Turkish menace against the massacres of the population of his home-island in the spring of that year. The neighbourhood layout has been rebuilt according to the local traditional architectural style, whose characteristics are the small yards, the alleys, and the\u00a0two-storied houses with the Ottoman wooden closed balconies; the latter create a conservatory-like effect (the <em>Kiosedes).<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1677\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1677\" style=\"width: 618px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chioscastle.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rsz_kiosedes_dimitris_mpaxas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1677 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chioscastle.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rsz_kiosedes_dimitris_mpaxas-1024x574.jpg\" alt=\"rsz_kiosedes_dimitris_mpaxas\" width=\"618\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chioscastle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rsz_kiosedes_dimitris_mpaxas-1024x574.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.chioscastle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rsz_kiosedes_dimitris_mpaxas-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chioscastle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rsz_kiosedes_dimitris_mpaxas.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1677\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Ottoman &#8220;Kioses&#8221; (closed balcony) with their distinguishing conservatory-like effect<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>You will also notice that the Castle area includes three churches, namely St George, St Nicholas and St George the Kehr\u00ed, with very interesting historical and architectural characteristics; the latter is a\u00a0private chapel.\u00a0\u00a0St George is the main church, \u2018the cathedral\u2019, of the Castle. Archaeological excavations in its yard revealed\u00a0 that an older church pre-existed on the same spot during the Byzantine times; it was later taken by the Catholics who converted it into their rite, until, finally, it became a mosque during the Ottoman rule, the Esk\u00ed Camii. The edifice that we see today was\u00a0originally built to be used as a mosque in the aftermath of the earthquake of 1881 A.D. Immediately adjacent to the church of St George, you can see the Ottoman school for Muslim priests, the <em>Mendres\u00e9<\/em>. The cistern dates from the Byzantine period. Both the cistern and the fountain survive and you can see that they are constructed near the sea walls. In the same area you can also see an oblong, spacious domed building, the so called \u2018<\/strong><em><strong>Karn\u00e1yio<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u2019 ( small shipyard) or<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>Piritidapothiki<\/strong><\/em><strong>: Gunpowder Warehouse, probably of a Genoese origin; surprisingly, its use is dubious. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1119\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1119\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chioscastle.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/krya-vrisi1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1119 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chioscastle.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/krya-vrisi1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"krya-vrisi1\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chioscastle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/krya-vrisi1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chioscastle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/krya-vrisi1.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The domed cistern, &#8220;Kria Vrisi&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>The Castle also houses two Ottoman baths (Ham\u00e1ms); today the smaller one is a private property, whereas the larger has been recently restored and is used to host an array of cultural exhibitions.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1681\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1681\" style=\"width: 618px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chioscastle.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rsz_troulos_loutrwn_dimitris_mpaxas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1681 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chioscastle.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rsz_troulos_loutrwn_dimitris_mpaxas-1024x574.jpg\" alt=\"rsz_troulos_loutrwn_dimitris_mpaxas\" width=\"618\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chioscastle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rsz_troulos_loutrwn_dimitris_mpaxas-1024x574.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.chioscastle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rsz_troulos_loutrwn_dimitris_mpaxas-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chioscastle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rsz_troulos_loutrwn_dimitris_mpaxas.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1681\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Ottoman Baths, &#8220;Hamams&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Finally, one of the most peculiar, however significant monuments of the Castle is the horse-shoe shaped\u00a0tower, the \u2018<em>Koul\u00e1s<\/em>\u2019, a structure of unknown date. The reason which renders it so important lies in the fact that it has been built from ancient ruins (<em>spolia<\/em>: architectural members, marble decorative elements, etc) dating to different historical eras. The most prevalent theory on its role, claims that the Koulas must have been the central beacon of an entire chain of watch-towers (the <em>Vigles<\/em>), spreading along the island\u2019s coastline as well as across its hinterland. The Vigles were used as invigilating\/observation points erected in such a manner so as to ensure visual contact to each other &#8211; (\u2018<em>V\u00edgla<\/em>\u2019- <em>Vigilia<\/em> or\u00a0\u0392\u03af\u03b3\u03bb\u03b1\u00a0in Greek\u00a0and Latin means \u2018a place from where to invigilate\u2019). Every single step is equivalent to a trip back into remote centuries, into remote times! What are you waiting for, then?
